family hugging in front of Christmas treeAs the holiday season approaches, the Prescott Valley Police Department Criminal Investigations Division would like to remind everyone about the importance of property crime prevention. While this is a joyous time for celebration, it is also a period when property crimes increase. By taking a few simple precautions, we can work together to ensure a safer and more secure holiday for all. 

  • Lock Doors and Windows - Ensure that all windows and doors in your home (including your garage) are locked when you leave or go to bed. This simple step can deter potential burglars. 
  • Don’t Advertise your Absence - If you plan to be away during the holidays, make your home look as if it is occupied. Use timers for lights, radios, and TVs to create the illusion someone is home.
  • Join a Neighborhood Watch Group - This “old school” program really works. Neighbors look out for one another and report any suspicious activity to the police. 
  • Secure Deliveries - If you are expecting deliveries, try to be home when they arrive or ask a neighbor to collect them. Avoid leaving packages on your doorstep for extended periods of time, it can invite “porch pirates.”
  • Be Cautious on Social Media - Refrain from sharing your holiday plans or posting your absence on social media. Criminals, including people you may be acquainted with, could use this information to target your home. 
  • Use Outdoor Lighting - Adequate outdoor lighting can discourage criminals. Use motion-activated lights around your property, especially at entry points. 
  • Install a Security System - Consider installing a security system, surveillance cameras, or video doorbell cameras to protect your home. Visible security measures act as a deterrent.
  • Safeguard your Vehicles - Lock your car doors and do not leave valuables in plain sight. If possible, park in well-lit areas.
  • Home Inventory - Create an inventory of your valuable possessions, documenting serial numbers and taking photos as needed. In case of theft, this will help you with insurance claims.
